DTU Sustain is one of the largest university departments specializing in environmental and resource engineering in Europe. We are working to develop new environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies, methods and solutions, and to disseminate this knowledge to society and future generations of engineers.

Beech forests are our friends in the climate crisis but suffer under drought and heat
Measurements from the past 27 years show that Nature’s ecosystem services and good biodiversity remove CO2 from the atmosphere, thus reducing the effect of carbon emissions. However, it is also clear that ecosystem services are affected by higher temperatures and drought, i.e. climate change.

Unwanted waste or brilliant habitats?
When we remove offshore wind turbine foundations at the end of their service life, thousands of organisms may become homeless. A joint project between DTU and the energy company Vattenfall will analyse how we can best cater to biodiversity when turbines are decommissioned—work that over time will help us factor in biodiversity in life cycle assessments for offshore wind turbines and similar projects.
